Do you know that English alphabets make different sounds depending on the word they are a part of, the alphabets that they are next to, or even the origin of the word itself. This makes the English language pronunciation harder to learn through reading. However a majority (75-80%) of the words use a dominant sound for the alphabets. Take a look at the alphabet table below to learn the dominant phonetic sound for each alphabet.

Aa

The phonic "a" makes the sound "ay" as in ant, astronaut and apple. However, the "a" in the word "was" is non-phonetic.

Bb

The phonic "b" makes the sound "ba" sound in bat, ball and basket. 

Cc

The phonic "c" makes the sound "ca" as in cat, candy and cone. However, chat, change and chore are non-phonetic.

Dd

The phonic "d" makes the sound "da" sound in down, doll and date. 

Ee

The vowel E makes the sound "eh" as in egg, elephant and envelop or in net, set, and rest. 

Ff

Phonic "f" sound is made by pushing air out between your lower lip and upper teeth like in words four, friend and fence.

Gg

Phone "g" has a "ga" sound like in words girl, grass and glass.

Hh

The phonic "h" makes a "ha" sound like in hair, hangar and hold. It is made by pushing air out of your lungs with the tongue at floor of the mouth.

Ii

Phonic "i" makes the sound "ee" and not "eye". Example words include hit, sit, igloo, iguana, and sick.

Jj

Phonic "j" makes the sound "ja" as in jug, jam, jacket. 

Kk

Phonic "k" makes the sound "ka" similar to phonic c. Example words include king, kangaroo and kite.

Ll

Phonic "l" sound is made by unfolding your tongue from the top of your mouth to the bottom. Example words are lion, lamb, lock.

Mm

Phonic "m" makes the "ma" sound as in mad, mat, market. This is made by pressing the lips together.

Nn

The phonic "n" makes the sound as in the words net, nine, and nose. Its a nasal sound with your tongue pressed against the back of your top row of teeth

Oo

Phonic "o" makes the "oh" sound as in pot, ox, octopus. 

Pp

Phonic "p" makes the "pa" sound as in party, pet, pound. Non-phonic words are phase, phone, photo that sound like phonic f.

Qq

Phonic "q" makes the sound "qua" as in quick, quilt, queen.

Rr

Phonic "r" sound is made by a vibrating tongue pointing up to the upper row of teeth. Example words rabbit, rocket and road.

Ss

Phonic "s" makes the "ess" sound like in snake, slide and smoke. Non-phonic sounds are shop, ship and shake.

Tt

Phone "t' makes the "ta" sound as in tank, tent and ten. Non phonic sounds are thing, thumb and thick.

Uu

Phonic "u" makes the "uh" sound like in umbrella, upside, under. Non-phonic words are user, united.

Vv

Phonic "v" makes the "va" sound as in volcano and vulture.

Ww

Phonic "w" makes the "wa" sound in water and waste.

Xx

Phonic "x" makes the "ks" sound as in six, fix and mix. Non-phonic words are x-ray, xylophone.

Yy

Phonic "y" makes the "ya" sound like in yoyo, yak and yam.

Zz

Phonic "z" makes the "za" sound as in zoo, zebra and zip.

Next time you spell a word, try spelling it using phonic sounds. You will be able to understand that most words can be pronounced correctly using their phonic sounds rather than their alphabet sounds. This also makes it easier for kids to learn and read.
